Capt James Cook

Born 27 October 1728, James Cook was one of the first europeans to our wonderful shores of Aotearoa in 1769. I was asked to do this to represent some of the europeans that reached our shores. He was a great mapmaker, and is holding what could very well be the first copy of a map of New Zealand. He was killed in Hawaii some 10 years after he came to NZ. He died on Feburary 14 1779.

Heru # 1

This Heru, was the first of many, I made this out of Heart Totara. The patternwork on both sides is different. The Manaia facing up in the picture has the patterns; Rito Rito, Hae hae and Niho Taniwha, this side represents Ngati Kahungunu, from the Wairarapa. The other side has; Niho Taniwha and Hae hae, representing Rangitane from the Manawatu. In short, the area I am from (I was Born in Carterton, in the Wairarapa), and where I live now (Bunnythorpe, in the Manawatu). As chance would have it, these area's are also where both of my Kaiako are from.

Graduation Day!

'EHARA TAKU TOA I TE TOA TAKITAHI ENGARI TE TOA TAKITINI'
'MY STRNGTH IS NOT THAT OF AN INDIVIDUAL BUT THAT OF THE MULTITUDES'
YAY!! Yes today was Graduation day, and as the whakatauki says, I couldn't have done it on my own. Here is a picture of some of the 2005 Graduating crew.
Left to Right:
Craig Kawana (Kaiako), Joseph Lambett, Pat Lambett, Huaki Cooper, Becky Martin, Francis McNally-Te Maari (Kaiako)
Don't we look good?! It was a very nerve wrecking morning, but well worth it, we graduated with all of the other courses from Te Wananga O Aotearoa, Papaioia Campus, and it was another lovely day in Palmerston North. I would like to thank all those people who put this whole thing together for all of the students. I don't know you all by name, but you all did a wonderful job. A special thanks also to the Whakairo crew, those that were graduating today, those that were unable to attend and those who have started their journey this year. We are all an extended whanau now, and without each other we wouldn't be able to achieve the strengths and knowledge that comes with our chosen vocation. KIA KAHA! Let's go hard, learn as much as we can, and do this all again next year!!

ataahua

this is a painting that I did for my Dad for xmas. The Pohutakawa tree is in full blossom at xmas time in NZ, and the Ta Moko is a copy of the one on the fin of the Paea that I carved and painted,( to which my Dad has the original, carved and painted by my Grandpop.) This gift is to remind us that there is beauty in both the world of light and the world of Darkness, for those that are alive, and our loved ones who have passed.

Putangitangi 2

This Putangitangi is made of Red Raku Clay, and carved in a Koiri/ Mangopare pattern.

Putangitangi

The Putangitangi is a musical instrument, used for many purposes, one of which is to help soothe a mother in childbirth and to soothe the newborn as well. It has a gentle sound, that when played right is very melodic and relaxing. The sound of each Putangitangi depends on the medium used to make it, and how it is played. This one has been made out of a white clay normally used to make cups and plates.

Half face manaia with full body

'WHAKAPAPA'
This piece is carved out of Heart Totara. As with all my pieces, it has many stories, one of which is the story of two brothers, Tanemahuta and Tangaroa. Without these two Atua there would be no mahi whakairo. Tanemahuta is the god of the forests, and therefore is where the Rakau (wood) comes from, so he is represented on the top half of the main Manaia. With two smaller Centipede like Manaia on either side of his face. the bottom half is representing Tangaroa, which (to some iwi) without whom we would have no carving. The lower half of the main Manaia has a tail instead of legs and feet.

Paea: MDF

This piece was my first piece pu up for sale. It is made of Painted and carved MDF. Mounted in a 2 dimentional manor. The three background pieces represent Rangini- the Sky Father, Papatuanuku- Earth Mother, and one of their sons, Tangaroa- God of the Sea. The swordfish itself is a grandchild of Tangaroa ( to some iwi).

Manaia 2

Heart Totara was used for this piece.

Manaia

Heart Totara was used for this Manaia. This was the first of my pieces to be carved from Native Timber. How many Manaia faces can you see?
